Tess and Chayse Moment II

chaysing dreams cover_GoldMedal

This Tess and Chayse moment is from Chaysing Dreams. Enjoy…

Just as the knife is about to strike down, stabbing Chayse in the back, Gem leaps up in the air. The guy with the knife is tackled, with Gem on top of him. Just as quickly, she snaps his neck with her fangs, as if he’s just one of the rabbits she had killed earlier. He is dead.

I fly there, ready to attack the guy who was about to swing at Chayse, but something catches me. I can’t move. It’s Chayse. He has grabbed me by my waist and is holding me back. I’m uncontrollably furious, wanting to get my revenge for hurting Chayse like this. I want to kill them.

“No, no,” Chayse whispers in my ears. “They can’t know. You promised.”

I try to get free of him, screaming at him to let me go. The men stop advancing, trying to process what’s happening.

One of them yells, “That bitch killed Ken!” He has his gun pointed toward Gem. Gem is growling at him, fangs exposed, ready to strike. She looks like a wild animal, about to attack for her next kill.

“Stop!” yells Chayse. “I’m surrendering. I’m giving up. Just don’t shoot!”

“That bitch killed Ken!” the man repeats. The man’s hand shakes as he’s holding his gun. He’s terrified of Gem.

“Please!” Chayse says. “She was just protecting me. Nobody else will get hurt. I told you, I’ll go with you willingly.”

Chayse still has a hold of me. He sounds defeated. I quickly glance up at him. His bottom lip is bleeding, and his cheek is bruised.

“Who the hell is this girl?” another man asks.

“She’s a friend, that’s all. She’s harmless. You have no need for her,” Chayse replies.

“A friend, huh? So all the female clothes we saw in the house must have been hers. Seems like she’s more than a friend. And you won’t be telling us who we’ll be needing!” It appears as though this man may be the leader. He walks up to me. He has dark hair, a beard that’s a tangled mess, and beady brown eyes. He has a scar about two inches long by his right eye. He smells like filth. He slowly inspects me from top to bottom, and a nasty grin forms on his face.

“I like what I see,” he continues. The man starts to reach his nasty hand toward me to touch my hair.

Chayse grabs his arm midway. “If you even think about touching her, I promise you, I will rip your heart out.” His tone is deadly enough to stop the leader in his tracks.

Dracula Untold Review

dracula untold2

I’m going to go ahead and give this movie five stars. To be perfectly honest, I did not want to see it initially. I’m not quite sure why because ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been a huge fan of Dracula movies. But I guess I’ve just been burnt out of the whole “vampire” thing and just didn’t feel like spending a couple of hours watching a movie about it.

I’m so glad my husband convinced me to go with him. Truly, I enjoyed the movie tremendously. I had no idea what to expect. And boy, was I pleasantly surprised. Ah, the tortured soul at his best.

First, we’re introduced to Vlad, the human. Although he’s a fierce warrior, all he craves is peace. He has a beautiful wife and a little boy whom he loves more than life itself. Vlad is the prince of his kingdom, and his people have the utmost respect for him.

Unfortunately, the life he loves is not meant to last. The Turks come for them. Desperate to fight them off, and having no army of his own, he turns to the dark shadows. Vlad knows he has to sell his soul to the devil to save his family.

Sure, this movie has a lot of action, but it’s the emotional piece that touched me. Luke Evans plays the “tortured” Vlad perfectly. At some points of the story, I actually found myself crying.

There’s a very touching scene when Vlad is sitting in a church and prays to God for some strength to resist temptation. His son walks in and asks him if he’s sick. He then asks him if he’s sick because he was trying to save him. Vlad turned to his son and says, “Yes, but I would do it again.”

dracula untold3

He knew that he sacrificed himself for his family and his people, and he would make that same choice again. Honestly, knowing the end is coming for him, this scene gave me goose bumps.

To become mortal again, all Vlad has to do is fight off the thirst for human blood for three days. I don’t want to give away the ending but let me tell you this man fights to hold on to what he has with all that he possesses.

I absolutely love Vlad as a human and as a Dracula. He’s not only a badass, but also loving, passionate, compassionate, mysterious, loyal, fierce, and of course, hot as hell.

This movie will make you smile, send shivers up and down your spine, and bring you to tears. So, if you’re looking for a good movie to sink your teeth into, go see Dracula Untold.

Outlander Wedding

jamiequote2

I had to do a post on the Outlander Wedding. I’ve been obsessed with the books, and now that the series are on Starz, I am glued to the TV on Saturday nights. I mean it’s bad. Nobody is allowed to talk to me while I stand in front of that screen, mesmerized by every scene.

Tonight is the epic wedding! I’m so looking forward to the Outlander Wedding. Jamie Fraser and Claire Beauchamp become husband and wife. This wedding has to happen to save Claire from Black Jack Randall, the cruel English captain. Well, “cruel” is putting it mildly. Let me put it this way. His last week’s performance had chills running up and down my spine. He is the epitome of evil.

Claire is beside herself that she has to marry to save her hide because she has a husband in the 1940’s, and all she wants to do is get back to her life from that time. Jamie, the handsome young lad, is willing to marry her to save her from the evil hands.

jamie fraser

Ah, and things only get interesting from here on. You see, Jamie may act like he’s marrying her to help his “friend” out, but in actuality, he’s already fallen in love with her. We learn this much later in the book. Their wedding is the start of a beautiful relationship between them.

jamiequote1

I’m a huge sucker for a good love story—always have been. I have to say Outlander is one of the top love stories on my list. I absolutely can’t wait for the big wedding…oh, and then the wedding night. Ha! They better not hold anything back!

As I wait for the show tonight, I had to find a way to calm my anticipation—of course, through writing! So, here I am blogging about it.

To all you fellow Outlander fans, see you at the wedding!

Chaysing Destiny Update

author

Many of you have been waiting anxiously for the final installment of the Chaysing Trilogy. Let me assure you that I work on it every evening and every weekend—literally, every spare moment. Trust me, I’m dying for my closure too. 🙂

The good news is that the story is done! Man, does that feel good! I’ve gone through it once already, but I’m going through it again. It’s just what I do. I have to go over it to enhance the scenes, work on proper wording, the sentence structure, grammar…you know, just get it right.

For me, it’s imperative that my readers are “there” with the characters. I want my readers to feel the joy, the sorrow, the pain—everything that my characters are going through. So, as a writer, the emotional piece is priceless. I truly get inside my characters’ heads and try to portray what they’re going through.

That being said, what’s next? Well, when I’m done going through it a few more times, I will send the manuscript to editor(s). Then, I’ll revise it some more. When I’m completely satisfied with it, I’ll send it to the publishers. There, the publishers take another couple of months to format it and make it available to the readers on all major sites. Yeah, it is a long drawn out process, but my goal is to send it to the publishers by the end of this year.

So hang in there! I promise it will be worth the wait! I absolutely can’t wait for you all to read it because I love how the story developed.

In the meantime, here’s a little prologue for Chaysing Destiny. Enjoy!

Prologue

The pain is unbearable, but the reward makes it tolerable. I have to push harder to bring my baby into this world. As the fear for my baby’s safety consumes me, an overwhelming sense of sorrow sends tears cascading down my cheeks.

The sound of the explosion has me running toward the source. I have to save him. Screams and cries of women and children urge me to run faster.

Blood everywhere. Too many dead, mutilated bodies are all around me. No, please, no! I’m too late.

Suddenly I’m running through the field of beautiful wild flowers. I’m playing with Gem, and while I laugh, she barks with excitement. I glance over my shoulder to see Chayse running after me. I feel him tackle me, his weight holding me down. I laugh.

When he turns me over to face him, his eyes are not happy. Without any warning, the force of his knuckles land hard on my face.

Everything goes black.

The nightmares continue to haunt me. The dread of not knowing if these nightmares are a part of my past, present, or future petrifies me.

Too many questions. Not enough answers.

But I won’t back down. I will find my answers.

Cutting the Cord

In my novel, Chaysing Dreams, Tess, the main character leaves for Stanford. Here’s a little excerpt when her parents drop her off:

When our parents bring us to our apartment to drop Kylie and I off, it’s the strangest feeling. I mean, we’re going to be totally on our own. Eighteen and independent! Nobody is going to be checking up on me. No curfew! No rules! I can do whatever I want. Wow, it feels amazing to have this freedom.

Both of our parents give us really tearful goodbyes. My dad can barely look at me. He just mumbles to be careful under his breath and walks out.

After they leave, Kylie and I just lie on our beds in our apartment, staring at the ceiling. We both have separate bedrooms, but because the two bedrooms are across from each other, we can see one another. Instead of feeling excited, it feels empty. Just that quick, the appeal of “freedom” is gone.

In my own life, my oldest baby just left for college this week. After living under the same roof for the last eighteen years, I now have to get used to not seeing her every day. It feels like I’m just throwing her out there to the world. Is she ready? Did I prepare her enough? Will she be able to problem solve through tough situations? Will she know whom she can trust, or will she be naïve and trust everybody?

Yes, I torture myself with these thoughts every day and night. It’s just a mother’s instincts to protect her baby. If I can keep all of the pain away from my children their entire life, I would. I want nothing more than to protect them and keep them from all the cruelty and evil of the world.

But the practical side talks to me. Yes, I do have conversations with myself… you know, all of those voices in my head. Hence, I’m a writer. Anyway, the practical side tells me that I can’t keep my children in a bubble their whole life. Let’s face it. They have to go out there and learn. The only way they can grow up to be a respectable man or a woman is by experiencing all that life brings—and that includes the good and the bad. Yeah, yeah… blah, blah, blah…

My husband says it’s time to “cut the cord.” He keeps telling me we did our job with our daughter, and we should be proud. She’s attending a great university and isn’t that what all parents want for their children? To succeed? Okay, I’ll give that to him. But can’t she just go to a local college and commute from home?

Well, it’s been three days since Taj has left. And although, I miss her dearly, I know it would be very selfish of me to keep her from experiencing these years at a major university. After all, I attended the same university, and I have to admit, they were the best years of my life.

So, even though my heart feels like somebody is squeezing the life out of it at times, and I desperately try to take deep breaths to get some air into my lungs, I let her go. Ultimately, all a parent really wants is his or her child to be happy. And I have to allow my babies to find their own happiness.

Here’s to you, Taj. May you find your own path in life. And may your path be smooth and full of happy memories.

Date with Jamie Fraser tonight…

I know what I will be doing every Saturday night for a while. I’ll be on a date with Jamie Fraser in my family room, glued to the television.

About seven years ago, I read a series called the Outlander Series for my book club. And I fell in love with Jamie. Mr. James Fraser is the main hero of the books, and it’s so hard not to be drawn to him. He is intriguing, intense, sexy, a warrior, a man of principle, a protector, and the list goes on and on…

It’s really difficult to put the books in one particular genre. I’m pretty sure it’s under Historical Fiction. But I think it has a bit of everything in it. The heroine, Claire, falls back into time, and ends up in the middle of a war in Scotland in the 1700’s. And here, she meets a young warrior named Jamie Fraser. Well, let’s just say her life as she knows it will never be the same again.

Why do I bring this up now? All these years later, the series are now being televised on Starz. Trust me, the fans have been waiting impatiently for this moment. However, I was a bit worried. Many times, as a reader, you visualize the characters and the scenes a particular way in you mind. I didn’t want the show to ruin my visuals. For me, it was imperative that they choose the right characters.

Last Saturday, I watched the first episode. Yeah, I’ve seen that same episode two more times since then. I couldn’t be more pleased. They nailed it. Not only did they follow the books, but the characters were perfect, especially Jamie Fraser. Since he is definitely one of my fictional crushes, I would have been very disappointed if they didn’t pick the right actor.

Sam Heughan plays Jamie and boy, did they get it right! He’s intense, sexy, powerful, tall, strong, and even tender. If you haven’t seen these series yet, I strongly recommend it. It has action, history, love, passion, and suspense… I absolutely can’t wait for my date tonight!

In the mean time, I’ll leave you with some beautiful pics of Jamie (Sam Heughan).

Every Step Matters

small steps

Today is my one year anniversary since Chaysing Dreams has been published. Wow! What a ride.

When I first released Chaysing Dreams, it was more out of curiosity to see if anybody would like it. I thought all I had to do was to write the three books and share the story of Tess and Chayse to the world.

Was I wrong! I had no idea that your work doesn’t end once a book is published. I probably average 20-30 hours per week on writing, reading, and marketing. Most of my marketing efforts have been online. I honestly have had no time to go anywhere personally to get the word out except for a few book signing events I attended.

So, now that I’ve been in this “book” world for about a year, I sat back and reflected on all that I’ve accomplished.

  1. I have my own website! jalpawilliby.com I try to post something weekly if possible. But who would have thought that I was going to have my own website?
  2. I now have a Facebook page, twitter, and I just started Pinterest. Believe it or not, I have over a thousand followers on both Facebook and Twitter. Before all this, I had no knowledge of social media. I was forced to learn a lot—and you know what? I’m glad I did because let’s face it. The world is changing… and like it or not, social media is not going anywhere any time soon.
  3. I’ve got three trailers out on You Tube for Chaysing Dreams. Two are official trailers and one is a fan made trailer. I don’t know about you guys, but I’m a very visual person. Watching trailers is kind of like watching the miniature version of your book.
  4. Chaysing Dreams was on the Amazon best seller list several times. Here’s a picture when Chaysing Dreams was ranked just three behind Stephen King. amazon best seller
  5. It received the five star seal from Readers’ Favorite. Three different reviewers read the book and all three gave it five stars. When those reviews came back, it felt pretty damn good. 5star-shiny-web
  6. As of date, Chaysing Dreams has sold 452 copies (includes the paperback and the eBooks) No, it’s not thousands or anything. But to be honest, I was just expecting some close friends and family to buy it. The fact that strangers are buying it and liking it makes it all worthwhile.
  7. It has won “Book of The Month” recognition from Book Review Depot. This group is full of some amazing authors. So, I felt pretty awesome to be voted by them.
  8. More recently, it is a Readers’ Favorite International Book Award finalist in three categories. (Romance General, Romance Suspense, and Fiction Chick Lit). For me, this is completely not the type of recognition I would have expected. I know it’s tough to even be a finalist for these types of awards. If I win any medals from this contest, I’m going to Miami to accept my prize! finalist-shiny-web
  9. I have 68 reviews on Amazon (4.8 out of 5 ratings)… I have 55 five star reviews, 11 four star reviews, 1 three star, and 1 one star. I realize that not everybody’s going to LOVE what I wrote- that’s life. But overall, not bad, right?
  10. The best part of this experience: I have met some pretty cool people. I’ve gotten some loyal fans who contact me regarding my books. I’ve also met some great authors who are more than willing to share their experience and knowledge.

So for now, I’m going to keep on moving forward. It may be at a slow pace, but it’s better than standing still. I’m just glad that I had enough courage to put something out there, not knowing how it was going to be received. Trust me, that’s a very intimidating feeling… you never know if the reviews will be positive or negative.

One year! I made it through one year! Go me!

For me, every bit matters. Every reader matters. Every review matters. Every recognition matters.

I’ll keep taking the baby steps because you know what? Every step matters.

Keep Writing…

Chaysing Dreams cover copy

So now that I’ve been in the “literary world” for about a year, I’ve been trying to research on what the well-established authors are recommending.

The bottom line? Most say that a lot of it is luck. Not what I wanted to hear, but it’s probably reality.

But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have goals to help you get noticed… the advice that most give is to write more. Basically, the more books you have out there, the more the chances are of you getting noticed. Some indie authors have over forty books out there.

Forty books? I’ve got two books out right now. It’s taking me about nine months to get a book published (writing the story, going over it a thousand times, sending it to the editor, going over it again another thousand times after getting it back, and sending it to publish). So that means it would probably take another thirty-five years or so to write thirty-eight books. Yeah, not going to happen.

I work full time and there’s just not enough time. I literally come home every evening and work on marketing and writing. I have to put in at least couple of hours of writing every night. I go to sleep at 1:00AM and wake up at 6:30AM to get ready for my day job. But, if I don’t stay focused on my goal, I’ll never get any books done.

I just read another author say that you should put in at least 10,000 hours into your writing before you can even assess how successful you are. Wow! That’s a lot of hours.

So, are these goals completely unrealistic for me? Absolutely. But guess what? I’m focusing on the little accomplishments. I enjoy it when I can give some readers a bit of escape from the craziness of the world. I like getting recognized by receiving various recognitions/awards (ie Readers’ Favorite Book Contest- both books are finalists in several categories; both have been Amazon best sellers in several categories; both have received numerous five star reviews). I especially love it when I see an expected review posted on Amazon. So, I’ll keep working hard because I love to write and create stories from this crazy head of mine. It’s called self-fulfillment.

Each of you authors out there should really look within yourselves and figure out what your individual goals are. Make sure they are realistic goals. If not, you’ll get discouraged. And help one another out. If you have a blog, host another author or post the review for their book on your site after you’ve read it.

My goals are simple right now:

  1. Complete this last book of the trilogy and make it the best that I can possibly make it.
  2. Get more exposures through google search when my name is googled.
  3. Get more reviews for my books.
  4. Keep up with all my social media and hope that helps to get more exposure. (I’ve got Facebook, twitter, google+, Pinterest)
  5. Try to blog at least once a week.
  6. Continue to learn more opportunities on what works and what doesn’t.
  7. After I’m done with the trilogy, if another idea of a story pops into my mind, well, I guess I’ll just have to grab my lap top again. 😉

I’m okay with baby steps.

If anybody feels like helping me reach any of the above goals, please read the books and leave me a review. Trust me, the reviews are priceless! Both Chaysing Dreams and Chaysing Memories are available on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Jalpa-Williby/e/B00EN2ZDCQ/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_1

Happy writing!

Readers’ Favorite Book Award Finalist

Readers’ Favorite Book Award Finalist

When I first decided to write the Chaysing Trilogy, it was in the summer of 2012. It was more of a challenge to myself—to see if I can even write a novel. Slowly, the story for Chaysing Dreams started to develop in my mind, and I began to take notes. To be honest, I had no idea what I was doing.

Finally, when I finished the rough draft of the manuscript, I sent it to couple of my good friends and my sister. I wanted to see if they even liked the story. After reading it, they encouraged me to pursue this further. They felt that I had something really, really good, and I need to look at my options for publishing it.

Again, I had no idea what I was doing. So, I went through the manuscript some more (probably a hundred more times), and hired an editor. After this process was done, I decided to self-publish since I had no patience to wait around for the traditional publishing. I heard sometimes trying to publish traditionally may take years. Nope, I didn’t have time for that. I was just trying to get the story out to see what people thought about it.

Chaysing Dreams was published in August of 2013 and the sequel, Chaysing Memories, was posted in April of 2014. Still naïve about the literary world, I forced myself to find out about reviews and different ways to market.

You can imagine my shock when the reviews started coming back for my books and majority were five star ratings! Then, I was further surprised when both books became Amazon best sellers. Literally, I remember staring at my computer screen in awe, completely stunned.

Last week, I received an email from Readers’ Favorite for the International Book Award Contest. On a whim, I had submitted both books, never expecting anything out of it. From what I understand, they get submissions from all over the world. Honestly, I wasn’t even going to click on the link on my email to see who made the finalist list. Why would a small time author like me get noticed?

Curiosity got the best of me. I think I was more interested to see if I recognized any authors or books on that list. When I saw my name “Jalpa Williby” listed five times, I sat there for few moments, wondering if I was reading it right. Finally, when my brain registered that Chaysing Dreams was a finalist in three categories and Chaysing Memories in two categories, I began screaming. My poor husband ran up, thinking something was wrong. Even my dog started barking, wondering what the hell was going on.

Sure enough, Chaysing Dreams is a finalist for Romance Suspense, Romance General, and General Chick Lit. And Chaysing Memories is a finalist for Romance Suspense and General Military. Apparently, they only pick an average of six books per category. On September 1st, the list of winners will be released. But in the meantime, I’m just ecstatic to say that both of my books are finalists for the prestigious award.

Here’s the link: https://readersfavorite.com/2014-finalists.htm

Who would have thought? Even though this started out as a curiosity—a challenge—it’s been hell of a ride. I’ve put everything I’ve had in writing these stories, holding nothing back. I don’t know how far this amazing ride will last, but for now, I’ll do my happy dance and yell, “CHAYSING DREAMS AND CHAYSING MEMORIES ARE FINALISTS IN READERS’ FAVORITE BOOK AWARD!”
